What is toon ruins?
|
Toon Ruins is a dedicated YouTube channel specializing in in-depth analysis of cartoons and media. My content delves into a variety of themes, including theory crafting, exploration of story symbolism, and discussions on media representation.
I started to make videos in 2016 with a deep dive into Steven Universe, and have since expanded the channel to cover a diverse range of shows, including Infinity Train, The Owl House, Miraculous Ladybug, and many more. With over 150,000 subscribers and a growing community, Toon Ruins is a passion project where I prioritize genuine interest and enthusiasm. This commitment often results in spontaneous uploads, as I believe that authenticity resonates with viewers. If I’m not passionate about a subject, I won’t share it—and I strive to ensure my audience feels the same connection. |
Featured Fanart
Here’s some amazing fanart created by my wonderful community! If you have fanart you'd like to share or have featured on my website or at the end of my YouTube videos, please send it to me via my linked social media or post it in my Discord server. I’d love to see your creations!
Toon ruins intro process
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Velo Animation to create a custom opening sequence for my YouTube videos. After sharing my vision, Jakeneutron skillfully developed the storyboard, which was subsequently executed by the talented team at Velo Animation. I am thrilled with the final result and wanted to showcase some of their exceptional work here.
If you choose to support the channel financially, your contributions help fund projects like this. Looking ahead, I aspire to create themed openings for each holiday. Currently, there are two variations of the opening—have you noticed them both in my uploads?

Channel Characters
I have a diverse range of characters featured on my channel through art and infographics, although I primarily use a talksprite that represents myself when addressing the audience. Below, you’ll find character reference sheets for these characters. While you may have seen them visually, I don’t often mention them by name. Enjoy exploring!
FAQ
Q: What does the name Toon Ruins Mean?
A: The name Toon Ruins reflects the concept of piecing together fragmented ideas and insights. Inspired by my childhood fascination with Ancient Egypt, I envisioned excavation sites where layers of meaning are gradually uncovered. The term "ruins" was chosen deliberately, as it signifies that not all answers are immediately clear; some elements may be missing or obscured. My role is to fill in these gaps through critical thinking and context clues.
I explored various options for the channel name, but it was actually my mom who suggested Toon Ruins. The moment I heard it, I knew it was the perfect fit.

Q: Do you have a team working for you?
A: No, Toon Ruins is run entirely by me! I handle all aspects of the channel, including writing, researching, voicing, recording, and editing my videos. Many people assume that the channel’s name suggests a larger team, but I operate independently. While I do collaborate with friends and colleagues for art and animation assets, the core content is created solely by me. YouTube serves as a platform for me to experiment with new editing styles and skills, which is essential for my professional growth. At the bottom of this page you’ll find a list of all my channel contributors, along with links to their social media. I highly recommend these talented artists, as they have been a pleasure to work with! |
Q: What were your inspirations for making cartoon analysis videos?
A: My inspiration for creating cartoon analysis videos stems from my experience with ASD. Many individuals on the spectrum experience hyperfixations—intense, focused interests that can border on obsession. I sought an outlet for my passion, and to my surprise, others were interested in what I had to share. This unexpected outcome has been immensely rewarding. This boosted my preexisting love for video editing, and the channel became a space where I could discuss my interests without feeling like I was overwhelming people in my personal life. This is also why to this day, I only cover things that I'm passionate about.
My focus on cartoons stems from a genuine passion for the medium. I find animation to be more appealing than live-action shows and movies. While I do appreciate live-action content, it has never resonated with me in the same way that animation does. My love for cartoons drives my analysis and exploration, allowing me to dive deeply into a medium that truly inspires me.
Q: What is the name of the cat featured in some of your videos?
A: His name is Connor! He is a domestic short hair who was born in 2018 and was adopted as a rescue when he was around four months old. Connor is my therapist certified Emotional Support Animal (ESA) and has a very... unique personality.
I frequently share updates about his playful antics on social media. Connor is leash trained, and you may notice him wearing Soft Paws in some photos or videos. These are safe, vet-approved coverings that do not restrict claw mobility or cause discomfort. Although he doesn’t wear them as often now, they were helpful when he was younger, as he tended to get stuck on various surfaces and occasionally hurt himself.

Q: Why haven't you covered ____ subject?
A: I try my best to avoid covering topics where I lack personal experience. For instance, I wouldn’t create a video titled "Tourette Syndrome Representation in the Media" since I don’t have Tourette’s. It’s crucial to center the voices of those who have lived experience, especially when discussing disabilities or discrimination. In the future, I may explore collaborations with individuals from different communities, but for now, I believe it's important to give space to those who truly understand these experiences.

Q: Why did you delete ____ video?
A: As a content creator, I’m not immune to making mistakes. If a video has been deleted or altered, it usually indicates that the information was outdated, incorrect, or poorly articulated. Sometimes, it reflects a change in my perspective on the topic. Additionally, I no longer cover leaks and have removed or privatized all related content, as I have come to understand the potential harm that leaks can cause. I strive to improve and provide accurate, responsible content. Thank you for your understanding.

Q: Will you ever cover content that isn't animated?
A: It's possible, but I would likely only reference non-animated content as examples. I find that there aren’t many live-action shows or movies that capture my interest to the same extent as animation. However, I believe in keeping an open mind, so I won’t rule it out entirely!

Q: Do you have resources for people with ASD and/or ADHD?
A: While I’m not an expert, I can share my personal perspective and experiences with both ASD and ADHD. I believe the most beneficial approach is to educate yourself—understanding how your disability affects you and learning effective management strategies can be incredibly empowering. Sometimes, simply identifying your experiences can provide clarity.
It's also important to recognize and challenge harmful stereotypes and misconceptions that may arise after a diagnosis. It can be overwhelming initially, but with time, it does become easier.
For helpful resources, I recommend the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) and the Autistic Women & Nonbinary Network (AWN). I advise caution with organizations like Autism Speaks, which are often viewed as detrimental and dangerous to the autistic community and neurodivergent individuals.
If you or a loved one have ADHD and experience driving challenges that may be related to the condition, this resource from Shamieh Law may be helpful. A special thanks to Paul Black for his thoughtful recommendation and insights on this topic.
Take care of yourself, and remember that you are not alone on this journey.

Q: Are you open to collaborating with other creators?
A: Absolutely! I’ve participated in numerous collaborations and enjoy writing and recording segments for other channels. I prefer to collaborate with creators I know and share similar beliefs with, which makes me a bit cautious about working with strangers or lesser-known channels. However, I welcome inquiries, so feel free to reach out through my contact page!

Q: Will you accept sponsorships?
A: Yes, I’m open to sponsorships, but only if they align naturally with a specific video concept and if I genuinely believe in and like the product. I typically turn down sponsorship offers because many don’t resonate with my personal interests or values. Quality and authenticity are my priorities!
